Many of my paintings feature vibrant colors and celebrate the rich flora and fauna of the Malaysian rainforests, but there is also a part of my work that is more introspective and features a limited color palette.
These paintings draw upon my personal experiences and identity as a woman of Malaysian-Chinese-Melanau descent, influenced by contemporary Western culture. Other sources include photographs from my childhood and my family’s oral histories. Rather than using abstract elements and colors to evoke an emotional response, these pieces accomplish this through the use of human figures and representational elements such as Chinese characters, maps, flowers, butterflies and the giant nautilus spiral.
