Regeneration- Original
This painting features California redwoods in various stages of regeneration following the 2017 Tubbs Fire with the iconic profile of Mount Saint Helena is visible in the background.
California redwoods are known to have a remarkable ability to recover from fire damage, but the science behind their remarkable resilence is still being investigated. A team of scientists recently used advanced carbon-dating instrumentation to determine that these remarkable trees were able to utilize acient buds under their bark that dated back centuries - to the early years of the tree's life. They also found that the new growth contained a significant amount of carbon from stored reserves that dated back more than 50 years in some cases.
On your next walk in the woods, take a moment to appreciate the majestic wonder of these remarkable trees - among the tallest and oldest living things on the planet.
