When Heather first reached out to me, she introduced herself as an early childhood education specialist passionate about integrating art, science, and math into the school curriculum. She had been researching local artists, and that’s how she found me. She wanted to introduce my artwork—centered on California’s natural beauty and flora—to the preschoolers at Carey School in San Mateo.

I was deeply moved by her enthusiasm and the idea of inspiring young children through art. From the very beginning, these preschoolers embarked on a journey of creativity and discovery. They explored my work, shared their own nature photos, sketched in the garden, and painted with large brushes—each stroke filled with wonder and excitement.
In February, Heather reached out again with an incredible invitation: they wanted the students to meet me! We arranged for a virtual meet–and-greet in March to start, allowing me to connect with these budding artists and learn about their creative process.
That same month, they took a field trip to Seal Point Park for a nature walk and painting experience. It was breathtaking; views of the Bay, the bridges, the airplanes soaring above, all blending into a day of exploration and artistry. Every child painted at the park, each canvas capturing a piece of their happiness.
As their passion for painting grew, they started a mural project on a fence outside the playground in early March. Though the rainy weather slowed progress, their enthusiasm never wavered. The children designed their favorite nature images, transforming the fence into a shared expression of beauty for the community to enjoy.
Finally, in May, we arranged a painting demonstration during Art Week at Carey School. When I arrived at the school, I was greeted by 40 enthusiastic preschoolers and their wonderful teachers. Their energy was contagious!
Together, we celebrated the beautiful nature mural they had been working on—a collaborative piece reflecting their growing appreciation for art and the world around them.
The mural now stands as a testament to their creativity and love for nature. Each of the preschool classes are represented: the Bunnies, Meerkats, and Mingos. It is dedicated to the community of the Carey School, Transfiguration Episcopal Church and San Mateo Neighbors.

I am beyond grateful for this experience—the opportunity to meet these young artists, to see them find joy in painting, and to witness the way art connects us to the natural world. Their enthusiasm and creativity reaffirm the power of art, not just as a form of self-expression, but as a bridge between generations, nature, and community.
To these wonderful children and their educators—thank you for reminding me why I paint, and for allowing me to be part of this incredible artistic journey.
