Joy of Spring
This painting was created around the time of Lent, which is a time of reflection and renewal in the Christian tradition.
The vase (ping) is a symbolic representation of peace (ping’an) and harmony in the Chinese tradition. In this case the peonies are depicted in purple – the traditional Lenten color that was once reserved for royalty. The vase is resting on a nautilus which provides a symbolic representation of the cycle of life, and a connection with the Divine. This element represents a family’s faith legacy which is often passed down from generation to generation, a spiritual foundation that provides stability and balance.
The butterfly is a universal symbol for joy, transformation and new life. These are also the major themes for Easter and the coming of Spring.
