Golden Gate Poppies
Longtime clients know that my work does not usually incorporate architecture—or almost anything man-made, for that matter! But at the time of this painting, I was ready for an artistic challenge. And having lived in the Bay Area for over 25 years, what better subject to tackle than the international symbol of San Francisco?
With this composition, I wanted to capture two icons of our Golden State: the Golden Gate Bridge and California Golden Poppies. Both are marvels of engineering: one natural, the other man-made. One is reborn each year and thrives on air and water. The other is repainted each year and is in a battle against those same elements.
I decided to depict a view from the Golden Gate Bridge overlook at Presidio—one of the best places to view the bridge in its entirety. My large dancing golden poppies are highlighted in the foreground. The view presents a combination of both impressive architecture and stunning natural beauty, which I believe will delight other appreciators of California’s treasures.
